Styrax Benzoin                                                                          Base note

Benzoin oil's sweet, heavy vanilla aroma suggests a tropical forest filled with exotic flowers.  And in fact the benzoin tree grows wild on the Indonesian island of Java.  The intense, viscous oil is from resin tapped from the tree, forming a gum from which the oil is obtained.

Uses

Benzoin oil has expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties, which contribute to its reputation for relieving respiratory congestion, coughs and catarrh.  The oil can be diluted in base oil and rubbed onto the chest, released into the air via a burner or diffuser, or a little may be put on a tissue, or a pillow.

Chapped, dry or irritated skin can benefit from the application of benzoin in a moisturising base oil or lotion. It is also a handy oil for the first aid box.  Apply a couple of drops on some damp cotton wool as a compress directly onto cuts.  Its styptic properties means that it can help the body to stem bleeding.

Used in massage, or added to a bath, benzoin has a deeply calming influence on the nerves, warming and soothing away stress and emotional tensions.
