Coriandrum sativum Middle note
The seeds and leaves of the coriander plant are well-known from their use in cookery, especially in Eastern European and Indian dishes. The essential oil for aromatherapy use comes from the seeds, which yield a clear or pale oil with the same sweet-spicy fragrance as the culinary spice.
The oil possesses anti-oxidant and depurative qualities, meaning that it has a detoxifying effect on the blood. It also aids the breakdown of fats. It makes an effective addition to any diet or detox regime, and can be massaged into the skin (diluted in a carrier oil), or emulsified in a teaspoonful of whole milk and added to a bath.
As a general stimulant, coriander oil can re-awaken the appetite, combat fatigue and also act as an aphrodisiac.
